Ahead of the 2015 International Peace Day, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and other stakeholders has called on Nigerians to maintain peace and shun violence as peace has become so elusive, not just in Nigeria but the whole world.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, Director General of the IPCR, Prof. Oshita O. Oshita, who is also the Chairman, Planning Committee for the International Peace Day, lamented the rate of unimaginable violence and atrocities against humanity across different parts of the globe.
He said, “In Africa, the ECOWAS region and Nigeria, we are confronted daily by acts of violent extremism with grave consequences for the inalienable right of the people to life and personal safety.”
Oshita stated that this year’s theme which is ‘partnership for peace, dignity for all’ draws attention to the need to build partnerships for peace as a mechanism for securing the dignity of human beings.
“Indeed, it points to the need to build alliances, synergies and networks for peace, without which we are all collectively vulnerable to violent conflict and the destruction that comes with it.
“We therefore use a day like this to remember our brothers and sisters who have either been killed or displaced by the acts of terrorism, particularly in the north eastern part of the country” he said.
The International Peace Day is marked globally on 21st September of every year, in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/282 of September, 2002.
