Chelsea have suffered a massive blow ahead of this weekend's game with Everton, after it emerged that first choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out for at least two months with a knee injury.
Mail Online report
that the Belgian stopper is definitely out of the Saturday lunchtime
clash, though Chelsea don't yet know the full extent of the injury. It
was initially thought that Courtois could have been ruled out for longer
as there were concerns the player had suffered cruciate-ligament damage, though that is now not believed to be the case.
Substantial swelling around his knee had stopped doctors from making an exact prognosis, but it is now accepted that the former Atletico Madrid man will spend a number of weeks on the sidelines.
Chelsea
sold former understudy Petr Cech to Arsenal in the summer, so it looks
as though summer signing Asmir Begovic will be the man to step in to
replace Courtois over the upcoming series of matches. It's a series of
games that look tricky to say the least for Chelsea, as the likes of
Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool all visit Stamford Bridge before the
end of October.
The
Premier League champions have not enjoyed the greatest of luck so far
this season, and they currently sit a huge eight points behind league
leaders Manchester City after a mere four games of the new season. City
have maintained a 100% record and beat Chelsea 3-0 in August, while the
Blues have also lost at home to Crystal Palace and failed to beat
Swansea.
Chelsea also face a return to the Champions League next week, where they kick off their campaign against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
